Louvre Window Installation in Malaysia: Measurement, Sealing and Commissioning

Installer drilling and fitting a window frame during installation work
Window installation requires controlled fixing, frame alignment and protection of the surrounding opening before final sealing.

Louvre window installation converts a fabricated assembly into part of the building envelope. A correctly made window can still bind, leak or rattle if its frame is twisted, its sill is unsupported or drainage is sealed shut. The installation method must suit the wall, frame and exposure rather than rely on expanding foam or perimeter sealant to correct dimensional errors.

Product selection and supplier scope are covered in the aluminium louvre window guide. This page follows the site sequence from survey to handover.

Survey before fabrication

Measure width and height at the top, centre and bottom or both sides. Check diagonals to identify an out-of-square opening. Record wall thickness, reveal depth, sill slope, existing subframes, finishes and hidden services. Photographs should show the exterior exposure and internal obstructions.

Agree whether dimensions are structural, finished or manufacturing sizes. The difference accommodates installation clearance, packers and seals. For replacement work, determine how the existing frame is anchored and whether removal may damage tiles, render or waterproofing. Resolve access equipment and disposal before production.

Review the approved drawing

The drawing should identify overall size, frame sections, mullions, blade count and material, glass, handle position, opening direction, screens, finish and fixing concept. For motorised units, include cable entry, supply, controls and access panel. Confirm that handles clear the reveal and that blades or casements do not collide with screens or fittings.

Do not fabricate from an architectural elevation alone. Section details show how the sill drains, where sealant sits and whether the frame aligns with the wall's water-control layer.

Pre-installation hold points

  • Opening accepted: Dimensions, squareness and substrate are within agreed tolerance.
  • Window checked: Size, finish, blades, hardware and labels match the schedule.
  • Drainage identified: Sill orientation and weep locations are understood before sealing.
  • Fixings approved: Anchor type, edge distance and corrosion resistance suit the substrate.
  • Interfaces ready: Flashings, membranes, trims and electrical provisions are coordinated.
  • Protection available: Finished aluminium and blades will not be exposed to mortar, sparks or abrasive debris.

Prepare the opening

Remove loose material and contamination. Repair weak substrate before drilling. The sill must support the frame while allowing intended drainage. Existing waterproofing should be tied into the new detail rather than cut and abandoned. Dry-fit the assembly to verify clearance.

Use compatible packers at load and anchor points. Random wedges can twist jambs as screws tighten. Packers should not obstruct drainage or create a bridge that directs water inward. Temporary support must hold the frame without marking the finish.

Set frame geometry

Position the frame, check level, plumb, diagonals and straightness, then install fixings progressively. Do not pull an uneven wall into line by distorting the aluminium. Maintain the required reveal and sealant joint. Recheck blade operation after initial anchors and again after final tightening.

Anchor spacing and type should follow project engineering and system guidance. Wind loads pass from blades to carriers, frame, anchors and substrate; a strong frame with unsuitable fixings leaves the load path incomplete. Coastal or wet locations require appropriate corrosion resistance.

Seal without trapping water

A perimeter joint normally includes backing material and compatible sealant with enough depth and width to accommodate movement. The surfaces must be clean and prepared as required by the sealant manufacturer. A thin cosmetic smear is not a durable movement joint.

Keep sill weeps and drainage cavities open. Internal and external seals must work with the wall design so incidental water is directed outside. Applying sealant across every visible slot can create a reservoir inside the frame. The system components guide explains the drainage route.

Install blades, screens and controls

If blades are site-fitted, verify length, edge condition, orientation and clip engagement. Work in a controlled sequence and do not flex glass into position. Check that aluminium blades remain straight and finish protection is removed without scratching.

Fit screens square and secure while preserving access to handles and blade replacement. Connect motors only after mechanical movement is free. Confirm electrical isolation, cable protection, limits and control direction. A motor should not be used to overcome a binding linkage.

Commission the assembly

Cycle each bank fully several times. All blades should move together, stop consistently and remain secure at intermediate positions. Check closed overlap and seal contact from both sides. Inspect handles, locks, screen latches and any combined casement function.

Inspect perimeter joints and drainage outlets. Project-specific water testing should use an agreed procedure and pressure; a random hose test may be either too weak to reveal a defect or unrealistically severe. Record defects by window reference and retest after correction.

Handover information

Provide the window schedule, system name, finish code, blade or glass details, hardware references, motor information, warranty, cleaning method and spare-part contact. Demonstrate normal operation and explain when louvres should be closed during severe weather or air-conditioned use.

The owner should know where drainage points are and how screens are removed. Link the handover to the maintenance schedule. Good records reduce the chance that future repairs introduce incompatible clips, glass or chemicals.

Technical FAQ

Why must the frame be checked after each fixing stage?

Tightening anchors can pull a flexible aluminium frame out of square. Early checks reveal distortion before all fixings and seals are complete.

Can expanding foam replace mechanical anchors?

No. Foam may fill or insulate a gap, but structural loads require a designed fixing path into suitable substrate.

Where should perimeter sealant be applied?

At the designed frame-to-wall joint with compatible backing and preparation. It must not block system drainage openings.

What should be tested at handover?

Blade movement, closure, handles, screens, motors, perimeter seals, drainage and agreed water performance should be checked and recorded.
