What Is The Function Of Dosing Pump?

A positive displacement pump called a dosing pump is used to inject a solvent or another material into a flow of water, gas, or steam. Dosing pumps, which are usually limited in size, have a highly accurate flow rate for optimal power. They are the heart of an integrated dosing device equipped for rapid chemical dispersion. This concept of dosing extends to a broad variety of applications and industries, including waste water management and food manufacturing.

Dosing Pump Application Examples

Dosing pumps, also known as chemical metering pumps, are used in power plants, irrigation, distribution centres, medical laboratories, and mining activities, in addition to water treatment and food sectors. To neutralise the pH of a water storage tank, a chemical feed pump could be used. It can also be used to destroy bacteria as a chlorine pump. A chemical dosing pump is designed to work under difficult conditions, such as high temperature and high pressure.

How Does a Dosing Pump Work?

A dosing pump pulls a predetermined volume of solvent into its chamber and injects the chemical into a tank or pipe containing the substance to be dosed. It is operated by an electric motor or an air actuator and has a controller that controls the flow rate and turns the pump on and off. Other versions have more complex control mechanisms.

Chemical Dosing System Components

A dosing pump’s key components are as follows:

  • Chemical Container or Tank – contains the dosed substance.
  • Pumps come in a variety of materials and sizes, and they have an inlet, a suction line, and a dosing line.
  • Injector – a one-way valve by which a chemical is pumped into the product; it overcomes pipe resistance and enables the chemical to escape through the liquid.
  • Foot Valve – a one-way valve connected to the suction line that is mounted in the product drum to hold the pump ready.
  • Dosing Line – solid tube or strengthened hose; for high pressure application, may be PE, PVC, or stainless steel.
  • Control System – Ensures precision by turning on and off at predetermined intervals. It can range from a basic flow switch or timer to a SCADA central control system with the ability to fit into a larger system.
