If you’re reading this, you’re probably already familiar with plastic injection moulding. The technique of injection moulding is highly popular in the field of plastic manufacturing for several reasons, the most frequent of which is that it is the best way to produce huge and identical numbers of plastic components. Molding machines come in a variety of shapes and sizes, depending on what you’re doing and how the machine influences the result. Machines are classed mostly based on the type of drive system they employ: hydraulic, electric, or hybrid.

Machine for Hydraulic Injection Molding

Historically, this was the only alternative available until the early 1980s, when a Japanese business produced the first electric machine. Here are a few advantages of using an all-hydraulic injection moulding machine:

  • Lower starting price: These machines are substantially less expensive than their competitors.
  • Cheaper parts: If a machine part has to be changed due to damage or the part’s life-span has expired, the replacement parts are less expensive and simpler to obtain.
  • Stronger components: The machine’s hydraulic parts are more resistant to wear and tear—they are made to last.
  • Power: Hydraulic moulding machines have a high gripping force.

Electric Injection Molding Machines

Electric molding machines are a type of injection moulding machine that uses electricity to create. As previously indicated, electric moulding machines initially became accessible in the 1980s and soon gained popularity. Here are a few advantages of using an all-electric injection moulding machine:

  • Energy efficiency: Electric injection moulding machines only utilise energy while they are in use, which means that the motor output is limited to the load needs.
  • There is no risk of oil leaking, thus there is less downtime. Furthermore, the absence of oil implies that no filters must be changed, resulting in lower consumable costs.
  • Faster procedure: Because these machines are digitally controlled, the process is completely reproducible and does not require supervision.
  • Clean operation: Because this machine does not require oil, it is suitable for making medical parts. Typically, these parts should be made in a clean-room environment.

Machines for Hybrid Injection Molding

To some, hybrid vehicles promise the best of both worlds by combining the advantages of an electric engine with hydraulics. The following are some of the advantages of a hybrid injection moulding machine:

  • Diversity: the various hybrid injection moulding machine combinations allow for unprecedented levels of design freedom.
  • Best of both: Hybrid moulding machines combine the energy efficiency and precision of electric moulders with the force-generating capabilities of a hydraulic unit to provide the best of both worlds.
  • Motor replacement: Hybrids have replaced fixed-speed DC pump motors with variable-speed AC drives, allowing the pump to work only when needed and utilising the minimum amount of oil for process efficiency.
  • Less downtime: Compared to all-hydraulic or all-electric moulding machines, these require less maintenance and have less downtime.
  • Price point: It sits comfortably between all-hydraulic and all-electric moulding machines, making it a cost-effective alternative. Especially for producers of medical devices.
