Different types of air compressors are used in the industry and recognizing the variations between them is an excellent starting point for optimizing the performance of the air compressor.
Here are the most common types of air compressors used today:
- Reciprocating compressor: The compressors use one or two pistons to compress air. The up-and-down motion of the pistons compresses the air within the chamber and then releases it into the storage tank. The valve mechanism lets the air in and out of these piston chambers.
- Rotary screw compressor: this type of compressor uses a series of helical screws to compress air. The compressor pushes air into the room, and the helical screws force the air into a smaller and smaller space, raising the weight of the compressed air. This also extends to other types of rotary compressors, such as rotary valves.
- Centrifugal air compressor: a selection of radial air compressors for this type of system. These blades suck air from the core, and the high-speed spinning of the blades compresses it.
- Oil-free scroll compressor: Due to the number of moving parts and metal-on-metal applications inside air compressors, the use of oil is typically needed to provide sufficient lubrication. Oil-free scroll compressors do not need constant lubrication and are the ideal tools for many clean installations. There are also other types of oil-free compressors, but this is a common one.
